Upgrade begins Sunday

Hey everyone,

Just a reminder that we have a big upgrade on the way. Here is the rough timeline:

We're taking the server down Sunday, June 5, and it will probably be unavailable all day. Your web pages will still load, and all services will be shown as offline. Do not try to staff your service that day; you will not be able to log in.

We'll be bringing the server back on Monday, June 6. There will probably be multiple restarts and instability. Our goal will be to get basic services stable as soon as possible. You will be able to log in, but you might be happier if you don't.

We'll spend the rest of the week bringing up the less critical services such as gateways and getting everything re-stabilized and accustomed to load.

The admin site (especially reports) will probably be hit-or-miss most of the week. Please don't plan to run critical end of the year reports next week. (Do them tomorrow!)

We'll tweet our progress.

The great news is that once we're through this upgrade, we'll be able to start pushing out new features again. This upgrade will also allow us to re-enable new trial registrations and to provide new regional and private servers. We believe it will be worth it.

6/6/11 11amPST - are we going to be able to provide some level of chat service today? / this week? Currently we are still showing as offline. When you say BASIC chat on queues works, how do we at least get this level of access online?

Stacie,

Updates are happening on Twitter. Basic only worked for a little while, until lots of people logged in. Working to get presence working under load.

I know this sucks, but do not expect the service to be reliable at all today:

Can't reach the Libraryh3lp log-in page. Says "502 Bad Gateway nginx/1.0.4", Is this because of the upgrading still going on or a result of it?? This is on Tuesday in Sweden, and the upgrading should be finished by then as i udnerstand it.

Hi Staffan,

Very good point about the main page! We'll put a status page there instead, as soon as we can.

The webchat client has been working: https://libraryh3lp.com/webchat/

The admin site is unavailable currently.

The upgrade really runs through the whole week (it's a big system with a lot of pieces). Right now, basic chat on widgets is working, and we'll be adding other things from here on out. Status updates are on Twitter: http://twitter.com/libraryh3lp

A colleague deleted the chat.libraryh3lp.com buddy. Any way to get that back?

Erika,

Absolutely! Email us their username. You can send it to support@nubgames.com. We'll add it back.

Since the upgrade, in the Admin site the area to create new widgets has all but disappeared. Will this functionality be coming back?

Pam Sessoms said...

JNN,

Oh yes, it will definitely come back! We're still just working on improving a few more directly patron-facing things.

Our status board will have info on when it returns:

I don't see much on the status page or this blog about individual librarian presence/status. Currently our queue works but where we have made widgets for individual librarians they don't work (they appear to be offline or unavailable).

Hi Lee,

Oops, you're right, very sorry. Will have to update the status page about that.

To answer here:

Individual queues are not all working reliably. We do hope to fix this soon. However, to get these up and running right now, there are two options.

First up, you could create a queue just for each user and then assign
the user to their own queue. Example: user is pam. Create a queue called pam-queue and assign pam to it. Then, make widgets for the pam-queue.

http://libraryh3lp.com/chat/pam-queue@chat.libraryh3lp.com

Alternatively, you can skip the deal where you make a queue for each individual and reference the individual's widget using an older-style libraryh3lp syntax. Where you have this right now:

http://libraryh3lp.com/chat/username@chat.libraryh3lp.com

You would change it to:

http://libraryh3lp.com/chat/username@libraryh3lp.com

(the difference is the @chat part)

Chats using the individual syntax won't be logged and can't be transferred.

Sorry, I know this is confusing!

Any ETA on when we can get into reports to do end-of-school-year use statistics?

Pam Sessoms said...

re: stats. Probably a week or two. Right now, the closest thing to reports is the Calendar Page, which is a link on Monitor Activity. It will give you a daily raw count.
